Staff
Lesley Anne Moser, Owner/Head Teacher
Lesley Anne was born and educated in England. She has two wonderful children, her son was born in Cagliari, Sardinia and her daughter in Tunisia. It was whilst living in Italy that she studied to be a preschool teacher, working at The Monza International School and the Wall Street Institute both in Milan. Arriving in Switzerland in the early 90's, she worked at the WAC (Women's Activity Centre) - The Learning Tree Cooperative School. Here she set up the class routine and created a regular preschool environment. After international teaching experience, supplemented by workshops and teaching courses, she realised her lifelong dream and opened The Happy Snail in 1998. In 2004, Lesley Anne participated in the International Conference (Crossing Borders) in Reggio Emillia, and has ever since drawn inspiration from the Reggio Approach to Teaching Children. Based on "Desirable Outcomes For Childrens' Learning" (British Nursery Education), the school curriculum nevertheless has a personal touch focusing on quality and catering to each and every child's needs.
Mariana Fialho, Arts Teacher
Mariana is our arts teacher. She was born in 1968 in Portugal, where she obtained a degree in civil engineering. Whilst working she attended the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon. In 1996 she went to South Africa and decided to be fully dedicated to her art. In 1997 she moved to Germany where she continued to perfect her style. She has lived in Switzerland since 2000 and joined the Happy Snail in 2003. Not only does Mariana paint, but she also creates craftwork with various materials. She has held many successful exhibitions.
Joanne Legg , Assistant Teacher
Joanne started work at the Happy Snail in 2011. She was born in Dorset, U.K. in 1976.
She gained her NNEB Nursery Nursing Diploma in July 1995, after 2 years of study and plenty of fun!
Joanne has since travelled the globe working as a Nanny and using her 15 years + experience with young children, settled in Zurich in 2008 to work as a Nursery Teacher in a preschool setting.
Joanne has a small and slightly mad dog called Audrey who keeps her busy whenever she is not working and playing with the children at the Happy Snail.

The School
The School
The Happy Snail opened in August 1998. It offers a safe and happy environment for children from 3 to 5 years of age. Our classes are small and focus on children learning how to work, play and co-operate with others and function in a group beyond their family. We cover important aspects of personal, social and moral development, including the development of personal values and an understanding of self and of others.
Group Sizes: Our classes accept up to a maximum of 12 children. For many activities the whole class will participate together, for other activities smaller groups (according to age) will be formed.
Creative Development: Children learn to use their imagination, to listen and observe. They react in a variety of ways to what they see, smell, touch, hear and feel. They learn to communicate their feelings.
Language: Children learn to listen and to talk about their experiences. They listen and respond to stories, rhymes, songs and poems and take part in role-playing. Children will learn to recognise the letters of the alphabet, their own names and some familiar words, as well as being introduced to pre-writing skills.
Mathematics: Children will use mathematical language, such as circle, square and notions such as bigger than and more. They will be familiarised with number rhymes, counting games and activities. They will sort, match and count using everyday objects. They will recognise and use numbers.

Programme
Programme
Play is vital in children's learning. It is their work, a serious pursuit through which they make sense of the world. It is our aim to focus the children's learning on the Early Learning Goals, which cover a wide variety of subjects. Our early learning goals are: Personal, social and emotional development, language, communication and literacy, mathematical development, creative development, physical development, knowledge and understanding of the world.
Activities
The Happy Snail offers a wide and varied range of play activities and equipment. It is through play that a child develops basic skills.
Our activities include: Blocks, bricks, and junk models help in developing hand and eye co-ordination. Sand, water and dough strengthen fingers and provide a tactile experience. Cutting and sticking activities develop a more skilful use of hands and fingers. Painting and drawing help develop language and concentration. Jigsaws, threading and sorting improve visual discrimination. Music and movement develop language and confidence. Table games encourage children to share and take turns. Baking, measuring and pouring helps develop basic hygiene. Books and stories help to develop language and provide motivation for learning to read.

Philosophy
OUR PHILOSOPHY:
Our main aim is to create a positive classroom environment for your child. He or she must feel happy and comfortable whilst participating in intellectual, social learning activities and receiving cognitive stimulation needed in preparation for school.
EACH CHILD IS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL:
We believe that each child is unique and special and our programme emphasises emotional and cognitive growth through play, social interaction and self-expression from a wider variety of individual and group activities.
CURRICULUM:
Our curriculum is based on Desirable Outcomes For Children's Learning, British Nursery Education and also recommendations and guidelines from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (The Creative Curriculum for early childhood). We also draw inspiration from the Reggio Experience and Montessori methods of teaching.

TESTIMONIALS
h2>TESTIMONIALS
As most mothers, I visited several playgroups and pre-schools before selecting Happy Snail as the best place to send my daughter. What the Happy Snail has over similar facilities is a warm and happy enviroment where children enjoy learning from the moment they walk in the door. My daughter talks about the Happy Snail constantly at home and her younger brother can't wait to start there later this year.
Victoria Tayler, Horgen
My daughter Lucy attended Happy Snail for one term when she was 5, and my other daughter Evie, now almost 5, has been there since she was 2 yrs 10 months and is due to graduate this summer. I have found Happy Snail to be a wonderful place for them to have their first experiences of school. Lesleyanne has been so warm and supportive to them which has made them feel secure and valued and has helped them to develop their independence and feel confident about coming to school. It is great that the class numbers are small so that each and every child is valued and gets personal attention. They have had so much fun at Happy Snail, always busy with various projects, producing amazing crafts and shows, or going on field trips. They both have really enjoyed Happy Snail and also learned a great deal there both academically and socially, i.e. learning about the world, numbers and letters and life skills such as how to behave, table manners, tidying up etc. For older Happy snailers Lesleyanne also teaches them reading and writing using the Oxford reading tree scheme which is a brilliant opportunity to help them on the road to becoming readers.
I am so glad that a friend recommended Happy Snail to me and that my two daughters have been able to go there. I have also personally
enjoyed being part of the Happy Snail school which extends its warmth and personal touch not only to the children but the mums and whole families of the Happy Snailers. And I will really miss being a part of the school now that Evie is moving on.
Cath Reza, Wädenswil
My husband and I decided to send our son Alexander to the Happy Snail when he turned 3, after our visit one morning during Magic Circle. It has been a wonderful experience for him. After just a few months, we noticed a significant impact on the way that he was interacting with other people. He is more self-confident and is not afraid to express his opinions.
Lesley Anne founded the Happy Snail Pre-school in 1998. She has been a great influence on these children over the years - she and her staff recognise the uniqueness of each child and engages them fully. Her staff has been with her over the years and many of the parents have also sent their siblings to the Happy Snail - I believe there is no bigger compliment!
Jennifer Wu, Horgen
The Happy Snail Preschool is such an intimate, caring environment for kids. It was a wonderful place for my son to start school. He really blossomed there, both socially and academically, and he was excited for each school day. They even helped me make steps towards conquering his finicky eating habits! Lesley Anne and her staff are easily accessible, and parents are encouraged to visit when they like. I didn't have a thought about sending his younger sister anywhere else.

About
h2>READING AND WRITING CLASS
The Happy Snail Reading and Writing class is for children who want to learn to read and write English.
Classes are one afternoon a week, day and time to suit the demand.
Basic skills develop when they are meaningful to children.
Your child will be provided with opportunities to see how reading and writing are advantageous before they are taught letter names, their sounds and word identification. Their natural curiosity will be used to motivate them and to become more involved in the Happy Snails learning activities.
The minimum age requirement is 5 years and children should have a medium understanding of English.
For early reading and writing, The Happy Snail will use The Oxford Reading Tree (both work books and reading books).
Oxford Songbirds Early Phonics and Jolly Phonics, together with the Happy Snail's own resources.
